Why EAS (electronic article
surveillance) equipment?
When you stop and think about it, you are already in the
“retail security” business. In fact, historically, the
entire cash register/POS industry was developed as an
anti-theft tool. In 1884, John H. Patterson purchased two of
James Ritty’s “Incorruptible Cashier” machines specifically
to securely process cash transactions in his store. With the
“Sounding of the bell that was heard around the world”, the
National Cash Register Company was born. So was the
application of technology to address the security concerns
of retailers.
But how does that translate into a viable business
opportunity for today’s POS dealer?
The market potential is huge! In Europe, it is estimated
that over 80% of stores utilize EAS as an effective means to
reduce or eliminate shoplifting. Today, less than 20% of
retailers in North America have an EAS system in their
stores. More than likely, more than 80% of your existing
customers need a system, but either are not aware of the
technology or simply haven’t been approached.
EAS prospects are already your customers. If you are
currently selling to retail stores, you have a tremendous
base of prospects to draw from. Merchandise is being stolen
from their businesses every day. In fact, it is estimated
that there is $35,000,000.00 shoplifted from retailers in
the United States DAILY.
You know those accounts that you have been trying to crack
for years, but just couldn’t quite come up with the right
package? Now, by offering them something more, you open the
door to new opportunities. You are presenting yourself as a
“total solutions provider”. Your customers will appreciate
that you have a broader base of understanding of their needs
and offer solutions that will benefit them directly.
Ideally, your choice of EAS system will utilize Plug-N-Play
technology that can be supported within your existing
infrastructure. With EAS, the learning curve is very
straight forward. It doesn’t require any programming and
given its simplicity in design, requires very little
technical support. In essence, it is a one-station radio
that goes beep--end of training. Installation is quick and
easy requiring minimal expertise. In most instances, setup
can be done in minutes.
Most importantly, you need to partner with a
manufacturer/supplier that understands the POS business and
is willing to go the distance in offering innovative
marketing, promotion and lead generation support programs.
It is a win-win-win partnership. Your customers win because
they will be dealing with one company instead of several.
Your supplier wins because they are gaining broader channels
of distribution. Most importantly, you will win by having
profitably positioned yourself head and shoulders above the
competition.
A business simply can’t stand still. Breathing new life into
your business is essential for long-term survival let alone
growth and can be that EASy. By
broadening your product selection and business reach, you
will generate greater growth in sales and profits.
